Area code addition and 10 Digit Dialing in New Brunswick

To meet the growing demand for telecommunications services and numbers in New Brunswick, a new area code will be introduced in April 2023.

The area code 428 will be introduced and exist within the 506 geographic area in New Brunswick. To accommodate this new area code, customers in the 506 geographic area will move from 7-digit dialing to 10-digit dialing. Beginning on January 20, 2023, to complete all local calls, you should dial the area code plus the telephone number. 10-Digit Dialing (area plus the telephone number) will become mandatory on April 15, 2023. This will apply to all calls within both the 428 and 506 area codes that are currently dialed with 7-digits.

There will be no change to customers’ existing telephone numbers in the 506 area, and existing numbers are not changed in any way. Please note, if you have any automatic diallers or automatic call forwarding systems that are programmed to use 7‑digit dialling you must reprogram them to use 10‑digit dialling between January 20, 2023 and April 15, 2023.

Local and long distance calling areas and prices will not change with the addition of the new area code 428. Customers with telephone numbers in the new area code 428 will get the same calling areas and prices as customers in the 506 area with telephone numbers in New Brunswick.

N11 service access codes such as emergency calls (911), directory assistance (411), repair (611) and relay service (711) will continue to be dialed using 3‑digits.
